Workplace Traffic Management Plans
12-07-2025Vehicles and plant (equipment and machinery) within a workplace are a hazard to pedestrians.
To reduce this hazard, it is important to have a current Traffic Management Plan detailing how plant, vehicles and pedestrians can safely interact in and around your workplace.
In basic terms, a Traffic Management Plan is described as the introduction of controls to reduce the risk of collisions in your workplace, including measures designed to separate vehicles, mobile plant and pedestrians.
Where applicable, the Workplace Traffic Management Plan should include as a guide, the following criteria:
- Workplace layout with walkways
- Speed limits
- Pedestrian exclusion zones
- Traffic direction rules
- PPE, signs, barriers and floor markings
- Vehicle (car) traffic flow and parking
- Delivery vehicle (truck) traffic
- Out loading vehicle (truck) traffic
- Forklift traffic – safe use of a forklift
- Forklift loading / unloading exclusion zones
- Forklift parking, charge stations and security arrangements
- Traffic management induction, training and application requirements
Employers have a duty of care under the OHS Act 2004 to identify hazards, assess risks and control risks. A Workplace Traffic Management Plan should also have input from employees through a proactive consultative and communication process; and employees should be given appropriate training in understanding the plan requirements.
